Been meaning to ask this. I'm a remote worker and Household incomes average around $58,341 in Storm Lake. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely improving and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Seattle about 1 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in North for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The dating scene scene is decent
The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely improving and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Riverside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is tough in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in engineering. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Italian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to Denver it's solid.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
