Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Poverty rate is 6.2%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 44--F, so bundle up in winter. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 1 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Came here for family and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The school system is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely solid and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (West) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much pricey but now it's tough.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a writer, 45, moved here 2 years ago from Boston. I've lived in East and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The food scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 14 years here, that's my honest assessment.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Hope this helps!.

Bought a house here in 2017 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Minneapolis it's underrated.
