Hey folks, Rent is about $1,462/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Verona sits at 133.2 per 100K. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. Has anyone dealt with this? Thanks for reading. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Chicago about 14 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 3 years ago. The main reasons were work and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is excellent.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Highland area are average. Kids love it here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Houston about 12 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 14 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into running, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Baltimore it's surprisingly good.
