Random thought, I relocated for work and Crime rate is something to consider -Viroqua sits at 68.0 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Am I overthinking this? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Denver about 11 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 8 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.
