Is public transit usable in Waterloo?

Anyone else feel this way? I'm single, late 50s, and It's a a small town city with about 2,180 people. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Korean.

No regrets on my end..

I'm a physical therapist and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. The community is better than expected and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Miami about 1 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (The Heights) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. Good luck with whatever you decide..
