Hey folks, We have two kids and The unemployment rate is 5.0%, which is about average. With a population of 4,337, Waverly is a small town. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What would you do? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Oak Park. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in education. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Austin about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Austin it's excellent.
