OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Maple Ridge. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in legal. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 39, moved here 1 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Pine Hills and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The dating scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for couples. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 14 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've lived in Fairview for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of new development happening
- The weather scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
