First post here. Homes are going for about $179,100 on average. Average temperature is around 48--F, so expect cold winters. The city has invested a lot in new development. What would you do? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 4 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into running, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in tech. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Highland. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in finance. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Italian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a electrician and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is decent and there's always something going on.

I've been here 8 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..
