Hello, My family moved here when I was a kid. Rent is about $843/month for a decent place. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Should I be concerned? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 3 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- The housing market scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Good luck with whatever you decide..
